Dental Implants in Sharjah: Choosing the Right System for the Bone You Have

How I match implant systems to bone anatomy in our Sharjah clinic, with the specific cases that decide between Straumann BLT, Neodent, Winsix and Megagen AnyRidge.

A 54-year-old gentleman walked into my consultation room last month with controlled type 2 diabetes, an HbA1c of 6.8%, and a failed upper second premolar with 4 mm of crestal bone above the sinus floor. He had been told elsewhere that he needed a sinus lift, six months of healing, then an implant. He did not need that. He needed the right implant.

This is the part of implant dentistry patients rarely hear about. The system matters.

Why I don't place one brand for everything

Our clinic places four implant systems regularly: Straumann BLT, Neodent (also from the Straumann Group), the Italian Winsix system, and Megagen AnyRidge. Each one has a thread geometry, surface chemistry and drilling protocol that suits a different bone reality.

For dense D1 anterior mandibular bone I will often choose Straumann BLT 3.3 mm in a parallel-walled site, undersized by half a millimetre, with insertion torque targeted at 35 Ncm. Buser and colleagues published the long-term data on the SLActive surface in Clinical Oral Implants Research in 2013 — at ten years, survival was above 98% in healed sites. That is the platform I trust when the bone is hard and the aesthetics matter.

For the patient I opened with — thin posterior maxilla, soft D3 bone, limited vertical height — I placed a Megagen AnyRidge 4.0 × 10 mm. The knife-edge thread is designed for under-prepared sites in soft bone. We achieved 45 Ncm primary stability without a sinus lift, because the implant pulls bone in as it advances. Same patient, same surgeon, different implant for a reason.

The cost conversation Sharjah patients deserve up front

A single implant plus a porcelain crown across Sharjah and the Northern Emirates typically runs AED 4,000 to AED 10,000, depending on system, whether a graft is needed, and whether the abutment is stock or custom. Daman's basic dental annex does not cover implants in most plans. Thiqa requires pre-authorisation with CBCT and a treatment letter, and approval is not automatic.

If a clinic quotes AED 1,800 for an implant in Sharjah, ask which system. There is a reason it costs that.

What I look at on the CBCT before I commit

Every case starts on our Newtom CBCT, and for AI-assisted segmentation we use a Fussen Technology unit. Before I pick a system I want four numbers in front of me:

• Crestal bone width at the planned implant shoulder, in millimetres
• Available vertical height to the sinus floor or inferior alveolar canal
• Bone density on the Hounsfield scale at the apex
• The buccal plate thickness — anything under 1 mm and I am grafting

The case where I'd rather wait

If a patient is a heavy smoker, uncontrolled diabetic, or on high-dose IV bisphosphonates, I will not place an implant the same week. The ITI Consensus Conference papers are clear on this — survival drops, peri-implantitis risk climbs. I would rather reschedule by three months and treat the periodontium first. The day of surgery

Most of my single-implant cases are done in under 40 minutes under local anaesthetic — articaine 4% with epinephrine 1:100,000, buccal infiltration with palatal supplementation if needed. The site is prepared sequentially, the implant placed to manufacturer torque, a healing abutment hand-tightened, and the soft tissue closed with 4-0 monofilament, single interrupted. Patients walk out and have dinner the same night.

What I tell my patients before they sign the plan

I will tell you which system I am placing and why. I will tell you what the implant cost me, what the abutment will cost, and whether I think your case needs a graft. If you ever lose the file, every system we use has international service. That matters in a country where people move.

For complex cases I often plan jointly with our surgical team and the restoring dentist before we touch the patient. That hour of planning saves three appointments later.
